Twitter Makes Big Announcement at SXSW

Many South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive attendees have been waiting all conference to see Twitter co-founder and CEO Evan Williams talk today. He did not disappoint, starting his keynote conversation off by officially announcing @anywhere, the new Twitter platform that brings Twitter profile information directly to websites.

“At Anywhere” allows websites to deeply integrate Twitter into their sites. For example, when you browse a site that uses @anywhere, people and groups that have a Twitter profile will be highlighted in the text. If you hover over that link, a popup box will show you their Twitter profile, so you no longer have to jump off the website and over to Twitter to follow or retweet.

Like say you are reading an article about The Flaming Lips on The Huffington Post. If you hover over “The Flaming Lips”, a popup will allow you to follow them on Twitter, see their latest tweet, see followers, etc.

You can stayed tuned to Twitter.com/anywhere for the latest. Exact timeline was not specified today, but we are happy to note that our database of choice, Salesforce.com, will be among the initial participating sites.

Twitter and SXSW have a special relationship: Twitter was launched at SXSW Interactive in 2007. With record numbers at SXSW Interactive both last year and this year, the conference is a new favorite among the interactive community.

SXSW started as a music festival in 1987, adding film and interacive in 1994. Look for a round-up of our favorite SXSW Interactive take-aways in an upcoming post, including this one: be careful of the fedora, plaid shirt, aviator sunglasses, Rushmore-Academy-yellow-blazer and skinny jeans all in one outing. One accoutrement a day works just fine.

Cool. This would certainly increase Twitter's usefulness as a communications channel.

Very smart

This is a very smart direction for Twitter to go, and heightens the usefulness of Twitter as a communications channel.
