We are forever amazed by the wonderful organizations we work with. To
honor the incredible work in our community, we are starting a new
tradition of presenting one of our partners with the Groundwire
Connector Award for Engagement Leadership. The first recipient of this
award is the Washington Trails Association.

Earlier
this month we held the 2011 Connector Award Event to celebrate the
power of connection for social and environmental change. We wanted to
formally raise a glass to the awesomeness of Washington Trails
Association. We invited Outdoor Afro’s Rue Mapp
to be our keynote speaker and share how she is using engagement
technology to reconnect African Americans with the great outdoors. We
are also expanding our mission and wanted to share that we are now
bringing our engagement technology to new sectors, new organizations and
new communities.

Hey! So it was great to see so many of your shining faces on Tuesday here in our Groundwire office. We’re heads-down in the machines for a lot of our workday, so it’s always great to see staff and volunteers from the groups we work with, board members, the great folks who fund our work, and our fellow staff members who rarely surface from their offices…

Special thanks to guest speaker Sandra Cheng from Google. Get more information about applying for a Google Grant for AdWords here. (Please note that it can take quite a few months to get approval. So get on it.) Contact Groundwire strategy team member Chris McCullough (chrism@groundwire.org) if you need help getting started with AdWords.

Special thanks also to Libby Waldo, Senior Online Marketing Manager for Grist, who looks at her Google Analytics dashboard as much as she does her email. She spent time showing how she uses Google Analytics data every day to make decisions about her work at Grist, and also graciously workshopped a few of the audience's website analytics.

After many months, we are ready to launch Google Analytics for Plone, a brand new product from Groundwire Labs that pulls in Google Analytics information right to the page you are editing on your website.
Recap and video from our recent Microbrews and Micro-blog Knowledge Sharing event.

Thanks to everyone for coming to our Microbrews and Micro-blogs (and regular-sized blogs, too) knowledge sharing event earlier this month. We thought people might be just coming for the beer, and were glad to see attendees even more interested in discussing social media than they were in the keg. (At least that's what they told us.)

The Organizational Blog

Sarah Francis from MomsRising shared insights into their successful organizational blog. First things first: their blog is the centerpiece of their website—not tucked away in the back of their site, lucky to receive a bi-monthly update. (PS: Don’t. Do. This.) MomsRising staff members seek out a variety of influential bloggers to feed their blog—carefully nurturing and maintaining these relationships. They know their audience and can play to the house, and they are consistent in how they use their blog and website, ultimately resulting in offline action.

Watch Sarah Francis give tips on organizational blogging:

Twittering for Change

Cascade Bicycle Club Advocacy Director David Hiller’s no-nonsense approach to Twitter reminded us again of this tool’s value beyond the “I’m going to go get a sandwich” tweet. The CBC has 11,000 members, with about 1200 Twitter followers. During a recent session, Hiller tweeted out to CBC’s members asking them to call lawmakers in real time, resulting in 15 or so quick contacts to key decision-makers right when he needed them. Starting a Twitter program? Hiller has a few suggestions: 1) don’t alienate legislators by tweet-tattling on them, at the end of the day—you don’t want to burn political relationships; 2) trust is paramount to your community—they have to trust you’re going to provide valuable content; 3) hashtags # are important (essentially tags for your content); and 4) #FollowFriday is a good time to build your base.

Watch and learn from David Hiller:

So many questions to answer:

The Power of the Neighborhood Blog

Scott Durham from Central District News gave this great advice: if you want a blogger to write about your issue, make sure to highlight what is interesting to that blogger’s readers. Scott writes about the Central District for Central District readers, so if you want him to blog about your environmental (or other) issue, you need to explain how that issue is affecting Central District residents. Press releases? Scott couldn’t remember the last time he blogged based on a press release (although he receives hundreds each week). Want coverage of the transit bill you’re pushing? Make certain you explain exactly how it would impact residents in the Central District. It’s more work to pitch stories to individual bloggers than sending a single press release to all of your media contacts, but also your opportunity to target and refine your message to the people that matter, and reach people you might never reach through traditional media.

Listen to Scott talk about getting your issue covered:

Followed by a Q and A:

Finally, we were mildly shocked to hear the early twenty-somethings confide that they never really use Twitter (“Umm, I’ve seen my mom use it”), instead opting for Facebook and a little something we like to call texting. Twitter users tend to skew older than Facebook users, opening up some interesting opportunities around engagement and fundraising with your community.

Speaking of Facebook, our next knowledge sharing event will be in early September, and it's all about Facebook. The event is free, just make sure to hold your spot with this RSVP.

What’s your social media editorial policy? How do you build your Facebook fan base? What is the difference between a Facebook Fan Page and a Group? Have you seen online networking result in off-line organizing? These are a few of the many questions answered during our Facebook Knowledge share held here at ONE/Northwest central earlier this month. We hosted about 100 people from all over the environmental and advocacy community—if you made it, we sure enjoyed seeing you face-to-face, in-person. You look a lot different than your profile picture! J/K.

Our own Director of Client Strategy Karen Uffelman and Support Manager Sam Knox started the evening out with a little Facebook 101, including an entire slide devoted to the Fan Page vs. Groups question. (Umm, yeah. You know you totally want to look at page 2 of this.) The big take-away from Team Uffleman/Knox? No matter what the newest medium- smoke signals, homing pigeons, tin cans and string, Morse code, pen and paper, telephone, beeper, Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter—it always comes back to building strong relationships with your people.

Watch Karen and Sam give an overview of the world of Facebook.

Next up, People for Puget Sound's Creative Services Director Troy Coleman, and Bonnie Loshbaugh, Communications Intern, shared what's working in their Facebook world. One of many interesting ideas? Make Facebook an avenue for connecting with board members—identify them as page administrators and ask them to post regularly to your organization's page.

Watch this video and learn more about People for Puget Sound and Facebook.

Lauren Braden, Communications Director for the Washington Trails Association shared their guidelines: WTA posts 4-6 times per week, they always post a link back to the WTA website, they have an editorial calendar for Facebook just like they do for their newsletter and blog, and they do a mixture of 4 “Candy” posts (hiking trip info, cool stories and photos, etc.) to 1 “Caffeine” post (call for action, advocacy information). At WTA, they use Facebook as a part of their larger online communications strategy to provide educational, useful, value-added content that pushes people back to their webpage.

Hear more about a bear-hunting blog post and some heated conversation on the WTA Facebook page here:

Finally, Toby Crittenden of the Washington Bus shared some insights from the heart of the Facebook world—those 15-29 year-olds who live online. The Bus, who works primarily with this demographic, sees Facebook as an effective tool for getting the word out—they recently filled a local issues forum by telling their “core folks” on Facebook about it, who then told their “core folks,” who then told their “core folks”—which helped pack the forum for the evening.
