Northwest EcoBuilding Guild

The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild is a community of green building professionals and service providers in the Pacific Northwest. It was essential that the website we built for them was a centralized place people could come and quickly find the resources needed to help them with their sustainable building projects, and that the system could grow over time to meet the increased interest in green building. Visitors to the site can search the Green Pages -- a directory of green contractors, products and services -- as well as getting specific building advice from the Technical Building Flashcards (awesome diagrams!).

The Mission

The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild is a community of green building professionals and service providers in the Pacific Northwest. The Guild also promotes general knowledge of green building practices to the broader community. It was essential that the website we built for them is a centralized place people could come and quickly find the resources needed to help them with their sustainable building projects, and that the system could grow over time to meet the increased interest in green building. Visitors to the site can search the Green Pages, a directory of green contractors, products and services as well as getting specific building advice from the Technical Building Flashcards (awesome diagrams!) Members of The Guild can edit their membership information, update their Green Pages listing, post a job listing, register for events and much more.

The Challenge

The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild has grown to include local chapters in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia over the past 17 years and they needed a new, centralized website that members and visitors interested in green building would find useful.  They wanted to include a more scalable version of their searchable database of green contractors, products and services; new sections for their open-source educational green building resources; and easy-to-locate news articles and job listings for their community of sustainable builders. Their events, workshops and classes are an integral part of the services provided and we wanted to make sure that the website supported these listings. Finally, we wanted to make sure the site was easy for Guild members to update and edit.

The Solution

Our developers re-built the Guild’s online Green Pages directory using an integrated Salesforce.com and Plone website solution. When visitors to the site search the Green Pages directory they are searching Northwest EcoBuilding Guild’s Salesforce.com database.  Visitors to the Green Pages directory can search for builders, contractors, products and services in their region (and beyond) to support their sustainable building projects. Our developers also wrote a custom advertising system that allows them to push ads contextually on the site. When Members log in to the website, they can edit their membership information, edit their Green Pages listing, post and register for events, upload a project spotlight highlighting a recent project, submit ideas for Technical Flashcards, and access member information like minutes and bylaws.

The Northwest EcoBuilding Guild is an educational resource for its members and others.  Site visitors can download Technical Building Flashcards for specific green building tips, and people can easily search a calendar of events for certification, classes and more. Finally, members responsible for content can easily update and edit each section of the website.
